Winning photos from Because Art Matters on display at Spotlight on the Arts Gallery

 

In its continuing partnership with Because Art Matters, on Saturday, May 9, The Woodlands Mall hosted the awards ceremony for the organization’s 2nd annual high school photography contest. The theme of the 2015 contest was Texas Skies and students in grades nine to 12 were invited to submit photos that captured the Texas sky at its best.

 

Taking home top honors in the Because Art Matters contest was Kendra Gibson, a student at The Woodlands High School. Other top photographers included Jordyn Miller from Oak Ridge High School in second place; Christian Rodriguez from Willis High School in third place; and Nick Harmon from Oak Ridge High School with honorable mention.

 

The judging committee, comprised of professional photographers, selected the top three photos. Winning photographers received Shop Etc. Gift Cards from The Woodlands Mall, including $100 for first place; $75 for second place; $50 for third place; and $25 for honorable mention.

 

All photos are on display at the Spotlight on the Arts Gallery at The Woodlands Mall. The Spotlight Gallery is on the upper level near the Carousel.

 

Because Art Matters is the year-round educational and community outreach programs of The Woodlands Waterway Arts Council, a nonprofit organization that provides cultural enrichment through the arts. The Woodlands Mall has participated in Because Art Matters community projects since the fall of 2011.

This summer, The Woodlands Mall introduces a new Lolli and Pops store to the city of Houston. Self-proclaimed, and affectionately known as purveyors of sweetness, Lolli and Pops offers unique sweets from all over the world, including chocolates from Madagascar, sour belts from Spain, sodas from Japan and much more.

 The Lolli and Pops store is designed to delight its guests, bringing wonder and joy to all ages. From the English apothecary to the good old-fashioned American ice cream parlor, the retailer has found inspiration from sweet sources of all sorts to build a store that truly enchants the senses.

The Houston location will feature 1,960 square-feet of space devoted entirely to delicious treats and sweet gifts. Filled with collections of confections from wall-to-wall, the retailer offers candies sourced from world-wide famed producers as well as local Texas artisans. Choices change daily, depending on batch size and availability but there is always something good in store.

The new Lolli and Pops will be located on the lower level near Dillard’s and will be the company’s 13th store with more opening in 2015.
