Former UpStage Theatre settles into its new digs at Recreational Enrichment Center

The Woodlands area gained a new community theatre recently when it was announced that Points North Theatre Company had moved into the area and taken up residence at the REC – Recreational Enrichment Center at 1540 Sawdust Road.

Since 2000, Points North was known as UpStage Theatre and was based in Houston Heights area. Last year, the board of directors decided to rebrand itself with a new name and move into The Woodlands to bring its decades of community theatre experience to the area.

“From a business, artistic, and community perspective, moving into The Woodlands area was the best choice we could have made,” said Sam Sigman, president of the Points North board. “With nearly 20 years’ worth of experience and hundreds of productions that entertained thousands of audience members under our belt, we knew we could fill a void that we felt was missing from the local community theatre scene.”

Points North’s new motto is “Bringing an Exceptional Children’s Series, Evening Series, and Theatrical Education Experience to The Woodlands Area Community.” Each production is carefully considered for its artistic and cultural accessibility to the public. The inaugural production of the revamped theatre company will be A Fairy Tale Christmas Carol, a fun and unique twist on the classic holiday story.

“We are holding auditions at the REC on Monday, October 7, from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m.,” said Sigman. “These auditions are free and open to the public, and we are looking for actors of all ages to fill these fun roles. The production itself will run on Saturdays, twice a day, on December 7, 14, and 21.”

Montgomery County TX Community Members Can Learn How to Save Animal Lives at ‘Be A Foster’ Event on June 29

Operation Pets Alive! (OPA) is celebrating national “Foster a Pet Month” with the Petco Foundation and Skechers’ charity footwear collection, BOBS from Skechers, by participating in the national “Be A Foster” event taking place Saturday, June 29 from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. at four North Houston area Petco locations:

  • Petco Sawdust Woodlands, 522 Sawdust Rd, Ste C1, Spring, TX 77380
  • Petco Cypresswood, 19507 I-45 North, Ste. 7, Spring, TX 77388-6069
  • Petco Kuykendahl The Woodlands, 10864 Kuykendahl Rd, The Woodlands, TX 77381
  • Petco Spring Klein (99), 21348 Kuykendahl Rd, Spring, TX 77379

In addition to to encouraging the community to help save animal lives at their ‘Be A Foster’ events, and sign up new dog and cat, puppy and kitten fosters, OPA and the Petco Foundation will also recognize two of its current local pet foster volunteers at the Petco, The Woodlands, store located at: 10864 Kuykendahl Rd, The Woodlands, TX 77381.

The Petco Foundation is recognizing a select group of dedicated individuals across the country as “Foster Mentors,” like OPA Foster Volunteer and mentor, Amy Cullum. Amy has fostered countless homeless animals since joining OPA in 2014, from bottle babies to pregnant mothers, the elderly and forgotten, the injured and the sick. Amy is now serving as OPA’s Dog Foster Team Lead and is applying her talents to mentoring other foster families.

The Petco Foundation is also celebrating “First-Time Fosters” who have decided to help make a difference in animals’ lives by becoming a foster for the first time, like OPA first-time foster, Emily Price. Emily decided to make a lifesaving difference by fostering an entire litter of puppies for Operation Pets Alive. This litter needed special attention to help them overcome significant upper respiratory tract infections, and required around the clock care.

Both volunteers will be recognized at the Petco Kuykendahl, The Woodlands ‘Be A Foster’ event on June 29. Operation Pets Alive’s First-Time Foster, Emily Price, will receive a $200 Petco shopping spree to help get her started on her lifesaving journey, and both volunteers will receive BOBS from Skechers shoes to celebrate their lifesaving volunteer efforts.

“If less than two percent of pet-owning households in the U.S. fostered one pet a year, we could eliminate unnecessary euthanasia in animal shelters tomorrow,” said Susanne Kogut, president of the Petco Foundation. “We believe if more people knew about the lifesaving impact of fostering, and that it can be an easy and fun experience, more people would do it.”

Operation Pets Alive is one of more than 600 animal welfare organizations across the country joining together at Petco locations across the country to celebrate the lifesaving impact of fostering pets. OPA’s volunteers and staff will be on site to talk to potential new fosters, share their experiences, and demonstrate how to bottle feed kittens. The first four people, at each location, to sign up to foster with Operation Pets Alive, will receive a free Litter Genie® Pail.

Marcia Piotter, president and co-founder of Operation Pets Alive, shares how fostering is important to the community, “Fostering for OPA is the one thing a family can do to simultaneously free up valuable space in our local crowded shelters, all while giving a homeless pet the care and guidance needed to become a valuable family member. Operation Pets Alive is dedicated to helping our community become a safe one for homeless pets, but without a brick and mortar facility of our own, we rely on foster homes and families to work our magic. We simply cannot achieve this goal without the support and participation of the community we serve!”

The ‘Be A Foster’ event is part of the Petco Foundation’s annual ‘Be a Lifesaver’ campaign, which encourages everyone to help save animal lives by adopting, fostering, volunteering and donating. To create awareness and encourage more people to foster pets, the Petco Foundation has designated June as national “Foster a Pet Month,” and will share information and stories all month long to show how fostering pets is highly rewarding and makes a significant impact on helping the U.S. become a lifesaving nation. Community members in Montgomery County TX can also make a difference by making a donation at Petco, at checkout or online, for pets in need.

Vendors, booths, activities, and two Shakespearean productions will bring fun to the whole family

The inaugural Montgomery County Shakespeare Festival has been announced for Saturday, June 15, at Rob Fleming Park and Pavilion in The Woodlands. The festival is presented by Friends of Shakespeare Houston, a nonprofit organization dedicated to bringing quality family entertainment to the Montgomery County area.

The festival will take place from 2:00 to 8:00 pm and will include a kids’ area, vendors, food trucks, arts and crafts booths, and not one but two Shakespearean performances: the classic The Taming of the Shrew at 3:00 p.m. and the comedy Measure for Measure at 6:00 p.m.

“After three years of being intimately involved with the production of the Conroe Shakespeare Festival for the past three years, I and my business partners decided it was time to extend beyond the Conroe city limits and bring a worthy festival to the entire county,” said John Barton, executive director of Friends of Shakespeare Houston.

The festival is planned to spend each year at a new location somewhere in Montgomery County. For its inaugural year, it was decided to hold it in The Woodlands at Rob Fleming Park, located at 6055 Creekside Forest Drive.

“For the past several years, The Woodlands Township has played host to the popular annual Arts in the Park – Shakespeare in the Park program, of which we’ve been a proud partner, so we know how much the local audiences crave such a festival,” said Barton. “Our special day on June 15 also serves as something to whet the appetites of lovers of the Bard for this year’s Arts in the Park in September with a production of Macbeth in conjunction with The Woodlands Symphony Orchestra.”

Sponsorship opportunities and vendor spaces are still available for a limited time; for more information, contact montgomerycountyshakespeare@gmail.com.

Priyanka Johri, owner/broker of Woodlands Eco Realty, knows what it’s like to be caught on a special day without being fully prepared. Much like purchasing a house, letting things large and small fall through the cracks can spell disaster. So, in order to save Valentine’s Day for many forgetful Woodlands-area residents, she has put together a special plan.

“I have made reservations for two at several local upscale restaurants,” she says. “Anyone that finds themselves without a romantic table to take their loved one to, all they have to do is contact me and I can assign my reservation to them.”

With more than a dozen such reservations already in place, Priyanka is poised to play Cupid and save several relationships. Reservations at various dinner times are set for Thursday, February 14 at favorite Woodlands-area dining venues that are hard to get into on this, the second-most booked dining day of the year (the National Restaurant Association says that fully one-quarter of all Americans dine out on Valentine’s Day, being narrowly beaten out by Mother’s Day).

“This is just my little way to spread love and a sense of family to our local residents,” says Priyanka.

If you find yourself in dire need of a dinner table to impress your loved one, all you need to do is call 832-277-3577 or email Priyanka@woodlandsecorealty.com. The reservations are first-call-first-served, and are offered at no additional cost to the participants.

"Violinist for a new generation” will bring music – and hope – to audiences for a worthy cause

Lee England, Jr., the young virtuoso violinist once described as “the Michael Jordan of the Violin” by none other than Michael Jordan himself, has announced Houston as the first stop of an exciting new concert series.

England, who rose from a humble beginning as a six-year-old learning to play the violin to being signed by Quincy Jones to starring in his own Super Bowl commercial, is presenting the Lee England Jr. Evolution Experience Concert, a strings concert on Saturday, March 9, from 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. at the Shepherd School of Music on the Rice University campus.

The event will be a stirring performance produced by England, who will be accompanied by talented Houston string players and vocalists. This concert will include a fusion of classical and modern works with musical influences from various genres of music.

Houston earned a special place in England’s heart after a concert he performed here while on hiatus from working with Ben Vereen in New York. He cemented his ties with Houston when – as brand ambassador for the legendary Michael Jordan and “NBA man of entertainment” – he also performed during the recent celebrity-server dinner for the Chris Paul Family Foundation. Chris Paul and England share a common goal and passion to use their talents to improve the lives of area youths and give back to the community. As an example, England will donate a portion of his concert proceeds to the foundation that serves local Houston youth.

Tickets and sponsorship opportunities for this concert are available; visit www.leeenglandjr.com or email leeenglandjr@gmail.com for more information.

About Lee England, Jr.

England has made it his life’s work to open the world of music to as many people as possible. He has been called “the Soul Violinist” due to his stylistic blend of R&B, hip-hop, and soul, and has even been referred to by the legendary Quincy Jones as “a remarkable talent that comes by very rarely, creating original and unique music straight from his soul.” In addition to his mastery of this instrument, he adds viola, cello, bass, guitar, drums, piano, and voice to his arsenal of sound, allowing him to transcend artistic boundaries of traditional violinists.

England and his music break through numerous barriers, as evidenced by his performance history that refuses to be pigeonholed into any one genre or demographic. He has appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live! and also performed with John Legend at the Geffen Playhouse in Los Angeles for an audience that included George Lucas, Elton John, and Lady Gaga. Additionally, he has produced, composed, and starred in several BET Channel commercials, performed halftime shows in 26 NBA arenas, and composed the music for and starred in a Super Bowl XLVII commercial. He has also appeared in several WWE showcases, including the NXT TakeOver: Brooklyn II, an episode of WWE SmackDown Live, and at SummerSlam.
